Random Access Music 2019 Call for Scores

Updated: Apr 23, 2019

Submissions must be received via email by February 15, 2019.

RAM conducts an anonymous call for scores. A panel chooses from dozens of submissions, and the winning composition is premiered by the RAM players at the Queens New Music Festival. Submissions are anonymous and composers MUST replace their names with a pseudonym on any pages in the score where their name appears.

The work should be a composition 6-12 minutes in length that utilizes flute and up to five single strings (2 vl, va, vc, cb) with or without voice(s) (mezzo-soprano and baritone). It may NOT have been commercially published, or previously awarded a prize in any contest or competition, though it MAY have been premiered or recorded elsewhere. The work must have been written in the past 12 years. RAM encourages works that have already been written whether performed or not; RAM does not encourage composers to write a work specifically for the call, but will still consider those works should a composer choose to do so. Works requiring electronics are eligible, and the composer may submit audio for the electronic component along with the notated score.

There are no age, gender, or geographic requirements for submitting composers. Although we unfortunately cannot fund travel or hotel costs at this time, RAM does encourage submitting composers to plan on attending the concert. We would love to meet you! An archival video of the performance will be available to the winning composer(s).

We ONLY accept submissions electronically, as PDF files only.

Only the title of the piece, a pseudonym, and instrumentation may appear on the score.

Be sure to remove your name from any pages it appears on in the PDF (cover, interior, copyright, etc.) Failure to OMIT your real name will result in disqualification.

The file must be named using your pseudonym: “mypseudonym_RAMsubmission2019.pdf”. A second PDF document must contain your full name, pseudonym used on the score, address, phone number, and email address. Name the information file as: “mypseudonym_contactinfo2019.pdf”. Should your submission include electronic playback, name the electronic audio as: “mypseudonym_RAMelectronic2019.pdf”.

Submission Materials: (please no Word or Text documents, PDF only)

– 1 PDF Score, marked with a pseudonym, named: “mypseudonym_RAMsubmission2019.pdf”

– 1 PDF Information Document, named: “mypseudonym_contactinfo2019.pdf”

– 1 MP3 Electronics Sound File, named: “mypseudonym_RAMelectronic2019.pdf” (only for works containing electronic sound)

Failure to adhere to the submission guidelines will result in the work’s immediate disqualification.

Aside from electronic sound that cannot be understood via traditional notation, no recordings of the work – live or MIDI realizations – will be accepted, please do not send any.

Send your submission to scorecall@ram-nyc.org with the subject “RAM 2019 Call for Scores Submission”. All submissions must be received by February 15, 2019, 11:59pm. Composers will be notified of the results by the middle of March 2019. The winning composer(s) must be ready to provide performance materials when notified, no later than March 17, 2019. Your scores will be circulated among the judges only and the PDFs will be deleted after the contest.
