The 2010 RAM call for scores winner is:
Dana Wilson for “Howling at the Moon” for Saxophone Quartet.
Congratulations to Dana for his wonderful submission. We received 41 submissions by composers from all over the United States, as well as a few international submissions. The 6 judges met in teams of two and culled two works from the field as finalists for further consideration. The six finalists were the eventual winner and
Alexis Bacon “Cradle” (IN)
Peter Lindroth “Essex Cue” (Sweden)
Christopher Stark “Ambivalence” (NY)
Greg Steinke “In Memoriam: Sacagawea” (OR)
Matt Van Brink “Incubator” (NY)
The six finalists remained anonymous until the winner was chosen. The judges were:
Erin Rogers, composer and saxophonist
Allen Schulz, composer
David Fetherolf, composer
Andrew Lee, composer
Stefan Weisman, composer
Jonathan Pieslak, composer
Once again, we were humbled by the high quality of the submissions and we each found it difficult to narrow down the field. We’d like to thank eveyone who submitted a work this year. Please check back with us next season for our 3rd annual call for new scores.
RANDOM ACCESS MUSIC – Call for Scores
Receipt deadline: February 15, 2010
We are excited to announce our second annual call for scores. The members of RAM are looking for adventurous new music regardless of style. One winning composition will be performed at RAM’s 2010 spring concert by the Anubis Saxophone Quartet (www.anubisquartet.com) at the historic St. Peter’s Church in Chelsea.
Please submit a solo or chamber ensemble work 6-12 minutes in length, scored for saxophone quartet, trio, duo or solo in any combination of soprano, alto, tenor or baritone saxophones. Works that substitute other instruments for saxophones will not be accepted, however works requiring electronics are eligible, provided any technology required (beyond playback) be supplied and operated by the composer or the composer’s representative.
Submission materials:
• one score
• CD recording (encouraged but not required)
• composer’s name, address, phone number, and e-mail address (on a separate sheet)
Key materials must be submitted ANONYMOUSLY. Only the title of the piece and instrumentation may appear on the score and CD. Due to cost and time considerations, we will NOT accept online or digital submissions. Please provide a hard copy of your score. So that your submission remains anonymous in the judging process, please also send a sealed envelope containing your full name, address, phone number and email address with your materials. On the outside of that envelope write the name of your work ONLY. If you would like materials returned, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. All submissions must be received on or by February 15, 2010.
Mail materials to:

Random Access Music is proud to welcome our newest member, Andrew McKenna Lee. Andrew will be sitting in with us for this year, and will be participating in all of our collaboration concerts this year. We’re looking forward to hearing his music. We’ll be posting Andrew’s bio and other information to the site soon.
We’ll also be announcing our two collaborative ensembles in the next few weeks. Please check next week for all the details.
RAM and the Lost Dog New Music Ensemble will once again collaborate to present a concert of world and US premieres. We’ll be presenting two concerts:
Thursday, April 23, 2009 @ 8:00 p.m.
venue: Waltz-Astoria, 23-14 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria, Queens
and
Saturday, April 25, 2009 @ 8:00 p.m.
venue: University of the Streets, 130 E. 7th Street, New York, NY
Lost Dog will be performing new works by B. Allen Schulz, Jonathan Pieslak, David Fetherolf, Manly Romero, Erin Rogers, and the winner of the 2009 RAM call for scores, Massimo Lauricella.
Please join us for one (or both!) of these concerts.
We’re proud to announce the winner of our 2009 call for scores:
Massimo Lauricella (Italy) for his work entitled Eco di un tempo perduto (in memoria di Arnold Schonberg) for Fl., Cl., Vn., Vc., and Piano
Mr. Lauricella will receive a performance of his work by the Lost Dog New Music Ensemble in New York City this April. (We are trying to arrange a second performance at this time. We’ll announce those details as soon as our plans are solidified.)
Out of the 122 composers who submitted works anonymously, we would like to recognize 7 composers (in alphabetical order) whose works the judges deemed to be exceptional:
l’appel
by Philippe Bodin (Brooklyn, NY)
Peripeteia
by Richard Festinger (Richmond, CA)
Confession
by Vera Ivanova (Orange, CA)
Memoir of Dong-Hak
by Hee Yun Kim (Champaign, IL)
Concert House
by Alex Kotch (Durham, NC)
One More Moment
by Philip Schuessler (Champaign, IL)
Five Elements
by Peiying Yuan (Kansas City)
These 7 composers and Mr. Lauricella were the finalists culled from the entire list of submissions, and their compositions were still anonymous when we selected our winner from this group.
If you’d like to know more about our judging process, we have created a page that explains it in detail, along with some caveats about how to give yourself the best chance to break through a deluge of submissions.
Again, congratulations to Massimo Lauricella.
On Saturday night, October 18, at the Nimoy Thalia Hall at Symphony Space the Iktus Percussion Quartet gave a concert of 6 world premiere works written by RAM members especially for them. They rocked the house! It was obvious a great deal of care and work went into every piece. Several audience members told me how well they thought Iktus played and, of course, all of us RAM composers felt the same way. It can’t have been easy to pull all this disparate music together but, true to great performers everywhere, Iktus made it look easy.
If you love percussion music, keep a close eye out for concerts by this up and coming group. You won’t be disappointed.
I’d like to take this platform to second Allen’s message. IKTUS gave us six incredible performances on Saturday night, both a reflection of their exceptional hard work and extraordinary ensemble skills. The composers of RAM are priviledged and thankful to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented and dedicated group. We look forward to collaborating with Chris, Danielle, Justin and Roy again soon!
Highly recommend you check out IKTUS on Thursday, Nov. 20th at 1pm, at Trinity Church (74 Trinity Place, New York, New York 10006) with works by Ligeti, Wolf, White, and Reich.
Best wishes!
Erin
Thanks to everyone who came out to our concerts this past weekend. The members of RAM appreciate your continued support for our work. For those of you who couldn’t make it, please come to our next concert with the Iktus Percussion Quartet in October 2008! More information about this concert will be posted here soon. In the meantime, RAM would like to thank the Lost Dog Players and special guest artist Hai-Ting Chinn for their great performances. We believe this was our strongest program ever, artistically. We heard the same comment from many of our audience, too!
Please check back on this page soon–we’ll have more info about next season as soon as the details are confirmed.
The members of RAM would like to thank all of our supporters for a wonderful 2nd year of music-making! Our last concert Electric Ayres (a collaboration between RAM and Ursula’s End (David Nadal, guitar; and Holly Nadal, voice and electronics) was a huge success. We’ve uploaded a live recording of the concert if you’d like to take a listen!
Because of the financial and artistic success RAM enjoyed this past season, we are presently planning multiple concerts and collaborations with a wide array of new music ensembles and venues for the 2007-2008 AND 2008-2009 concert seasons. Included in our 2007-2008 season will be
- Breaking Down the Beat, a concert of older works that explore, develop, and/or deconstruct the use of rhythm in modern, American music (October, 2007);
- Lost Dog and RAM: RhododendRAM, another year of collaboration between the RAM composers and the musicians of the Lost Dog New Music Ensemble (May 2 and May 4, 2008);
- Iktus Percussion Quartet and RAM, a first-time collaboration between the two groups (Summer, 2008).
Right now, we are all enjoying a bit of time off this summer before we return to writing music and collaborating with musicians on future concerts. We’ll post more information about our coming season very soon. Please visit the website again later to find out the dates and times of our plans.
Stefan, Allen, Erin, Manly, Jonathan, and David would like to thank our collaborators and our audiences for their unstinting support of our work. We look forward to seeing you at our up-coming concerts!
